What are we fighting for when we talk about 'environmental rights?'“When people hear stories like that,” she told, “and there are so many stories like that unfortunately across Connecticut, across the United States of America, they don’t always end with somebody losing their actual life, but they do end with people losing the quality of their lives.” How is this possible, she queried, “that that would happen here in the United States of America? Don’t we have a right to clean water and clean air, safe climate and healthy environments? Isn’t that a right by virtue of the fact that we are people here living on this earth?”Our livelihoods are predicated on the health of our environment and ecosystem. If we don't protect it, we are doing damage to ourselves. Last week, we filed an amicus brief supporting Fresh Air for the Eastside and their challenge of the state's permitting of a landfill in New York which they say has violated their air quality rights:“The nation is watching New York, and how its green amendment is being used to advance needed environmental protections and justice,” said Maya van Rossum, who is the Riverkeeper as well as the founder of Green Amendments for the Generations. “New York is only the third state in the nation to have added a green amendment to its state constitution.
